Finding Inspiration

Whether you are an amateur or pro artist, it can sometimes be challenging to find inspiration for a piece. While the talent and creativity may be there, you may struggle to know where to start. If you’re having trouble finding the motivation or idea for creating, we’ve listed a few elements that influence us and so many other artists throughout history. Take a look below and find inspiration!

Art & Media:

Any artist can make art, but it takes a great artist to inspire others. One of the best places to find inspiration is through other works of art. This isn’t limited to works that are in the same medium as those you create. Paintings, photographs, movies, songs, and all other artforms affect us. So why wouldn’t they influence our art as well? You may be moved by the colors of a painting, the themes of a show, or the lyrics of a song and can interpret those elements into your work. Sometimes, we can even be inspired by the artists themselves. Exploring the life and works of other creators can also spark our creative juices. If you’re having trouble finding motivation to create, try immersing yourself in art.

Nature:

Mother Nature is one of the most powerful forces in the universe, so it’s no surprise that it’s also a dominant influence in art. It’s safe to say that nature is one of the most popular themes among art. Whether it’s wildlife, flora and fauna, landscapes, the sea, or any of the natural elements in our world, all have the beauty and power to motivate us. So many of us use our environment as a means of escape or a place of relaxation. Other times, we find ourselves revitalized or impassioned when in nature. The various feelings and impressions that the natural world inflicts on us can be transmitted into art. Take a walk in the woods or plan a day at the beach and find inspiration.

Travel:

Travel is another prevalent theme in art. Exploring new places and cultures provides us with experiences that we’ve never gone through before. These unique findings and adventures leave you with a newfound piece of mind and fresh perspective that leave you feeling quite inspired. Like nature, traveling can be a cathartic experience or a stimulating one filled with excitement. Either way, you’ll find inspiration in the people, food, culture, architecture, and history of a place. Taking those scenes and components from your travels and working them into your art can lead to breathtaking pieces. Be sure to take a camera with you as you travel so you can capture those experiences and look back on them later!

People:

Whether it's your family, friends, co-workers, or even strangers, there is always a story behind each person. The experiences of each individual differ from one another, and the people in our lives inspire us in so many ways that include our artwork. Taking inspiration from the lives of those around us is a beautiful way to honor them and produce meaningful art. You can create or capture a portrait piece of someone, write a poem or song about their life, or even use their interests as inspiration for a ceramic piece or painting. Think about those in your life who motivate you and turn the inspiration they give you into art.

No matter what form of art you love producing, it’s essential to have the right motivation and influences when working. We hope if you’re having a hard time finding a reason or subject for your art, you now have an idea of how to get inspired. There's always inspiration out there. You just have to find it!
